Customization Capabilities

From Standard to Custom: A Design Evolution

At Pedoc, our engineering team thrives on innovation, adapting and customizing power solutions to meet unique project requirements. One of our recent standout projects was the Supreme Court Courtyard Restoration, where our expertise in tailored power distribution played a crucial role. This project exemplifies Pedoc’s commitment to customization, problem-solving, and delivering solutions that seamlessly integrate into even the most sensitive and historic environments.

This project began with a simple inquiry from an architect seeking a power distribution solution for the courtyard of one of Washington, D.C.’s most historic landmarks—the Supreme Court.

The initial request was general:

“I am looking for a pedestal solution for a federal building here in D.C. that fits within a tight space. I’ve outlined a few modifications to a standard Pedoc pedestal in the attached. Before I commit to a fully custom solution—are there options for a custom assembly like this?”

Our team, led by Joe, quickly got to work. Within weeks, the team had collaborated with architects from Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Hartman Cox Architects, and construction project managers from Hill International and The Christman Company. We also coordinated with Worch Electric, Inc., the project’s electrical contractor, to design the ideal solution.

The Challenge

The challenge was clear: the custom power pedestal had to be discreet yet accessible, all while preserving the integrity of the surrounding landscape and architecture. With space constraints between a lamp post and a marble pilaster, a standard design wouldn’t work. Pedoc engineered a custom base, modified pedestal body, and specialized the conduit entry point to fit the precise requirements.

“We had to show them that we had to undercut the body itself, but leave the hinge top area intact,” Joe notes. “They requested an actual physical part to try out, which was the first time any customer had asked for that.”

Melinda adds, “Due to several factors, including offshore sourcing, most power pedestal manufacturers offer only a limited selection of options, and many avoid custom orders altogether. Communication challenges, such as time zone differences and language barriers, often create frustration and designs are susceptible to error. Additionally, transport costs can be costly and delivery timelines can be unpredictable. It’s highly unlikely that an offshore manufacturer could provide a customized pedestal sample and fulfill an order within a matter of weeks. This project was a huge success, and we are proud to be a US manufacturer who can tailor products to any specification.”

Multiple Access Solutions

  • Custom gang openings for increased power access
  • Specialized mounting brackets for unique installations
  • Foundation mounting options for close-to-wall applications

“We can make anything you want, basically,” says Joe. “If you have an idea, as long as it can be manufactured, we’ll find a way to make it happen.”

Manufacturing Excellence

Pedoc’s manufacturing capabilities set them apart in the industry:

Advanced Technology

  • Robotic welding for precise, consistent results
  • Custom-designed fixtures for exact component placement
  • Quality control checkpoints throughout production

Documentation and Process Control

“Originally, when I was first hired, I was involved in streamlining our documentation,” Ken explains. “We’ve gone through a few iterations where we’ve streamlined our documentation so that everything is uniform, and when things hit the floor, there’s no questions that should arise.”

Customer-Focused Process

Pedoc’s engineering team works closely with customers through a structured process:

Initial Consultation

  • Understanding customer requirements
  • Evaluating technical feasibility
  • Discussing customization options

Design Phase

  • Creating detailed CAD drawings
  • Developing submittal documentation
  • Customer review and approval

Manufacturing

  • Precision fabrication
  • Quality control checks
  • cULus compliance verification

“The submittal drawing we create is more than just documentation,” Ken notes. “It’s peace of mind for the customer. We draw it up in CAD, send it back to them and ask, ‘Is this what you’re looking for?’ It’s our mutual contract to say, ‘Hey, what’s in your head? I see it, and I was able to put it on paper.'”

Looking to the Future

Pedoc continues to innovate with new product developments. Our upcoming food truck and RV-focused models represent our latest advancement in outdoor power solutions. “Our ownership gives us open creativity to do whatever we want,” Ken shares. “That engineering side is cool and exciting.”
