GASTROINTESTINAL POLYPOSIS
DEFINITION:
A disorder involving the colon characterized by masses of benign
inflammatory polyps mixed with potentially malignant adenomatous
polyps.
EPIDEMIOLOGY:
- incidence: ?
- age of onset:
- older than 10 years of age
- risk factors:
- familial - autosomal dominant or sporadic
PATHOGENESIS:
- Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome is classified into three
disorders each associated with inflammatory polyps:
CLINICAL FEATURES:

- recurrent epigastric pain
3. Complications
- malignancy potential: malignancy of stomach, duodenum,
cecum, and rectum
INVESTIGATIONS:
1. Colonoscopy
2. Imaging Studies
- barium enema with air contrast (Double Contrast)
3. Biopsy
- inflammatory +/- adenomatous polyps
- areas affected: colon and stomach
4. Serum
- microcytic hypochromic anemia
- reduced serum iron and ferritin with elevated transferrin
MANAGEMENT:
1. Supportive
- iron supplementation for anemia
- nutritional support
2. Surgery
- if indicated
- snare-loop polypectomy with diathermy
