CHRONIC MOTOR OR VOCAL TIC DISORDER

 

DEFINITION:

A movement disorder characterized by single or multiple motor or vocal tics.

EPIDEMIOLOGY:

  • incidence: ?
  • age of onset:
    • mean of 7 years (from preschool to early school years)
  • risk factors:
    • familial (inheritance pattern not established)
    • may be genetically related to Tourette's Syndrome as this disorder and Tourette's Syndrome frequently occur in the same families
    • comorbid conditions:

CLINICAL FEATURES:

1. Diagnostic Criteria for Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder*

  • A. Either motor or vocal tics, but not both, have been present at some time during the illness.
  • B. The tics occur many times a day, nearly every day, or intermittently throughout a period of more than one year.
  • C. Onset before age 21.
  • D. Occurrence not exclusively during Psychoactive Substance Intoxication or known CNS disease, such as Huntington's chorea and postviral encephalitis.

    • severity of symptoms and functional impairment less than in Tourette's Syndrome

    INVESTIGATIONS:

    • all tests (CT, MRI, PET, etc) are normal
