CALICIVIRUS ENTERITIS

 

DEFINITION:

A viral infectious disease of the small bowel caused by an RNA virus resulting in a ?secretory diarrhea.

EPIDEMIOLOGY:

  • incidence: 1-2%
  • risk factors:
    • age: infants and children
    • season: year round
    • route: ?
    • environ: epidemic - hospital and sporadic

PATHOGENESIS:

1. Background

  • first described in the stools of children with diarrhea in 1976
  • antibody to calicivirus is acquired between .5-2 years of age and is present in 90% of older children and adults - no histopathology available of human calicivirus infections

CLINICAL FEATURES:

1. Prodrome

  • ?

2. Diarrhea

  • ?
  • associated symptoms - nausea and vomiting

INVESTIGATIONS:

  • 1. Stool

    • calicivirus is detected by RIA, EM, and immune EM
  • MANAGEMENT:

  • 1. Supportive

    • oral rehydration fluid (ORF) or intravenous rehydration
