ACUTE UVULITIS

DEFINITION:

An acute bacterial infection of the uvula characterized by fever, pain with swallowing, and drooling.

EPIDEMIOLOGY:

PATHOGENESIS:

1. Pathogens

1. Group A Streptococcus (GAS)

usually associated with tonsillitis in children > 5 yrs

2. H. influenzae type b (Hib)

usually associated with epiglottitis in children < 5 yrs

CLINICAL FEATURES:

1. Respiratory Manifestations

fever
pain with swallowing
drooling

INVESTIGATIONS:

1. Microbiology

cultures from uvula and pharynx
blood culture

MANAGEMENT:

1. Antibiotics

GAS - Penicillin V 25 mg/kg/d po tid x 10 days
Hib - Cefuroxime 75 mg/kg/d IV q8h

2. Supportive

if airway obstruction
